Mobile handset import tariff influenced by domestic production: expert
“There are currently over 42 million sim cards in the country and over 50 million mobile handsets which have been brought into the country with different import tariffs,” Mohammad-Gholi Yousefi told Iran mobile news agency (Mobna).
Ever since Mar 21, 2005, when the incumbent minister of industries and mines Alireza Tahmassebi first suggested domestic mobile handset production, its import tariff has been overshadowed by the suggestion, which eventually led to import tariff being cut from 60 to 25 per ent.
Some experts believe the cut in import tariff is beneficial to consumers.
