4% mobile handset import tariff beneficial to producers & importers
union believes the 4% tariff levied on imported mobile handsets is beneficial to domestic manufacturers and importers.
Afshar Froutan Larijani, in conversation with MOBNA, said the new tariff imposed by the Article 1 Committee would improve the present chaotic state of the mobile phone market.
He added that with such tariff, all authorized handset importers could expand their activities and so force out smugglers and smuggled handsets from the market, while benefiting the domestic manufacturers of such commodities.
The tariff was raised from 4% to 60% two years ago in a bid to boost domestic production, but later lowered to 25% after the initial plan had failed, having at the same time, increased illegal handset import.
