10% import tariff ineffective on domestic production

handsets will have no bearing on the continuation of domestic production.
Hamid Reza Monji, in conversation with MOBNA, indicated that the 10% tariff will definitely result in the domestic manufacturers’ bankruptcy.
He added that the government’s continuous change of tariff has not been satisfactory, and each time to the manufacturers’ disadvantage.
He pointed out that the change from 25% to 10%, which was ratified yesterday will be beneficial to importers only, and stressed the decision will leave no room for domestic manufacturers to maneuver.
The tariff in question was raised from 4% to 60% two years ago, but, following an influx of smuggled handsets and failure by the domestic manufacturers to meet their targets, was lowered to 25% a year or so later, but finally lowered still further to 10% yesterday.
